Coast Guard Academy

US Military Dictionary: Coast Guard Academy

An undergraduate service school at New London, Connecticut. Entrance to the academy is based on competitive examination, and not political appointment as with the three other major service schools. Founded by Congress in 1876 as the School of Instruction for the Revenue Marine, near New Bedford, Massachusetts, it was the Revenue Cutter Service School of Instruction from 1914 to 1915. It has been at its present site in New London since 1932, and it first admitted female cadets in 1975.
