Marketing Dictionary:

coated paper

Type of paper with a smooth and sometimes glossy surface finish also called coated stock. It is frequently used for high quality halftone printing. Both color and black-and-white photographs are better reproduced on coated paper. Uncoated paper is better suited to type and to line drawings and is less costly than coated paper. Coated paper stock can be covered on one or two sides, one or more times, with either white or colored pigments. The finish can be glossy, semidull, or dull. Various techniques are used for coating the paper with pigments (see cast-coated; dull-coated; machine-coated).
