Music Encyclopedia: Edouard Colonne

(b Bordeaux, 23 July 1838; d Paris, 28 March 1910 ). French violinist and conductor. He studied in Bordeaux and at the Paris Conservatoire. He was an orchestral violinist during the 1860s and founded, with the publisher Hartmann, the Concert National in 1873. His performances of French works, especially those of Berlioz, at the Association Artistique concerts gained him recognition; the Concerts Colonne still exist in Paris. Besides making numerous European tours, he conducted the Odéon theatre orchestra and became the Opéra's artistic adviser and conductor (1892-3).

Colonne, Édouard (ādūär' kōlôn'), 1838-1910, French conductor and violinist. He appeared as a conductor in Europe and England and was for several years first violinist of the Paris Opéra. In 1873 he founded in Paris the Concert national, which later became known as the Colonne Concerts.
