Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: color lookup table

A matrix of color data that is searched in order to change a source set of colors to a destination set. Color lookup tables (CLUTs) are found in graphics devices, such as display adapters, in order to translate the colors in an image to the colors in the hardware. They are also found in graphics formats, such as GIFs (see indexed color).
