Review

Twisted Sister were left in a strange position after the massive breakthrough success of their 1984 album, Stay Hungry. While the album contained more of a pop edge than their more raw preceding albums (Under the Blade and You Can't Stop Rock n' Roll), the heavy metal masses worldwide still embraced the album, as did the the lucrative MTV/pop audience. So for its follow-up, the band was faced with a question: whether to continue in a more pop-oriented direction or return to its early heavy metal. As the resulting album, 1985's Come Out and Play, proved, the band pursued a little bit of both. Behind the boards was Scorpions/Accept producer Dieter Dierks, and the compositions alternated between the ambitious (the title track), obvious ready-for-radio tracks (a cover of "Leader of the Pack," "Be Chrool to Your Scuel"), and songs custom-made for headbangers ("The Fire Still Burns," "Kill or Be Killed"). The aforementioned "Be Chrool to Your Scuel" contained such musical guests as Alice Cooper, Billy Joel, Clarence Clemons, and Brian Setzer, for which a humorous video was filmed, and ultimately banned by MTV. And although the album was certified gold shortly after its release, it soon slid from sight -- eventually leading to Twisted Sister's demise a few years later. When originally released on Atlantic, the cassette version of Come Out and Play included a bonus track, "King of the Fools," which was included on the Spitfire Records CD reissue in 1999. Strangely, the 1999 CD contained very muffled sonics. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Come Out and Play (November 9, 1985) is the fourth album by the American heavy metal[1] band Twisted Sister, released by Atlantic Records. It was less successful than its predecessor Stay Hungry (1984) both critically and commercially.

Overview

After the success of Stay Hungry, Twisted Sister were faced with the question whether they should continue in a more pop-oriented direction or return to their early heavy metal roots. They tried to do a bit of both, but the approach proved unsuccessful since Come Out and Play marked the start of the band's decline. According to an interview with the lead singer and songwriter Dee Snider found in the CD sleeve of Club Daze 1: The Studio Sessions, The Shangri-Las cover "Leader of the Pack" which was first included on Ruff Cuts (1982), an early E.P. mostly unknown to those outside the core fan base, was intended to boost the band's popularity while keeping old fans pleased. Eventually neither that one nor "Be Chrool To Your Scuel" featuring such musical guests as Alice Cooper, Brian Setzer and Billy Joel among many others received the reaction that the band was expecting.

Although the album sold more than 500,000 copies, earning the band gold albums, supporting tour was a fiasco with cancelled dates and low attendances. Drummer A.J. Pero left the band after the tour contributing further to the chaos which eventually lead to band's breakup after the release of Love Is For Suckers in 1987.

From a musical viewpoint, the album was not a huge departure from Stay Hungry, despite a little more commercial sounding production by Scorpions producer, Dieter Dierks. The vocals though, lacked the crisp of earlier records, partly due to the down tuned guitars.

Music videos of "Leader of the Pack" and "Be Chrool to Your School" followed the comedic nature of band's earlier videos but the latter featuring Alice Cooper was banned by MTV on the grounds that it was offensive. There was no video for the album's last single, "You Want What We Got". Instead, the band released four videos, ("We're Not Gonna Take It", "I Wanna Rock", "Leader Of The Pack" and "Be Chrool To Your Scuel") as the Come Out And Play: The Videos home video in 1986.

The album was re-released by Spitfire Records in 1999 along with all the other albums of the band, except Stay Hungry.
