Biography

Mixing folk and country influences with the sort of organic rock & roll championed by the Traveling Wilburys, the Brooklyn-based foursome Company took root in 2001. Drummer David Janik and multi-instrumentalists Adam Davison, Stephanie Rabins, and Christopher Teret met while attending Bard College in the Hudson Valley; they later relocated to Brooklyn and secured several residencies at local venues. With such publications as Time Out New York praising their performances, Company issued a string of self-released records before signing with Brah Records, a label managed by Company's occasional touring mates in Oneida. Parallel Time was released in 2005, and Oneida's Kid Millions signed on to the produce the band's follow-up. Old Baby appeared in February 2008, signaling a departure from the live sound of Company's previous work. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

Company was an ever changing collection of free improvising musicians. The concept was devised by guitarist Derek Bailey in order to create challenging and artistically stimulating combinations of players who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to work together.

At various times Company has included Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, Tristan Honsinger, Misha Mengelberg, Lol Coxhill, Fred Frith, Steve Beresford, Steve Lacy, Johnny Dyani, Leo Smith, Han Bennink, Eugene Chadbourne, Henry Kaiser, John Zorn, Buckethead and many others. Company Weeks, annual week long free improvisational festivals organised by Bailey, ran from 1977 until 1994.
