compression neuropathy

Food and Fitness: compression neuropathy

An inability to transmit nerve impulses because compression has damaged nerve fibres either directly, or indirectly by restricting their supply of oxygen. During cycling, the ulnar nerve in the palm of the hand is often compressed onto the handlebars leading to a loss of sensation and weakening of the hand, a condition known as ulnar compression syndrome. Compression neuropathy can lead to permanent paralysis of the hands. It is easily treated in its early stages by altering the hand position frequently and protecting the hands with tape or cycling gloves.
