CAT; computer assisted tomography; CT
A technique that combines computer technology with radiography. A CAT scan involves making X-ray images in layers or ‘cuts’ through the body to provide visual images of the spatial relationships of body parts in the transverse plane. It is used to diagnose sports injuries (e.g. overuse injuries, such as stress fractures, and the effects of a direct blow to the brain, kidney, and spleen), and in sports science to assess body composition.
