Biography

Perhaps best remembered for its musicians' later exploits with various bands, Norwegian power metal act Conception issued four very competent but not all that successful albums during its 1990s run. After starting out with 1991's Norway-only independently released The Last Sunset, vocalist Roy S. Khan, guitarist Tore Østby, bassist Ingar Amlien, and drummer Arve Heimdal added keyboard player Hans Christian Gjestvang for their sophomore effort of two years later, Parallel Minds. This was released (along with their reissued debut) by Noise Records and, surprisingly, climbed to number 23 on the Japanese charts, where melodic, progressive rock-tinged heavy metal happened to be in vogue during the '90s. Album number three, entitled In Your Multitude, followed in 1995 but the band was starting to feel the stress of both the media and public's love/hate response (love in Japan and select European nations, hate pretty much everywhere else), and decided to break up shortly after issuing a final bow called Flow (featuring keyboard player Trond Nagell-Dahl) in 1997. Not quite ready to retire, though, Khan quickly hooked up with American progressive metal powerhouse Kamelot, Østby went on to attain true guitar hero status with Ark, and the rhythm section changed direction via black metal band Crest of Darkness. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Band History

Formation and Record Label

The band was formed in Norway in 1989 by guitarist Tore Østby, singer Dag Østby, drummer Werner Skogli and bassist Freddy Samsonstuen. In 1990, after a demo tape, Arve Heimdal replaced Werner Skogli and Ingar Amlien replaced Freddy Samsonstuen. A year later, Dag Østby quit, and the band was forced to search for a new vocalist. After many auditions, the band hooked up with Roy Khan, an opera singer (who had to wear a wig because he didn't feel comfortable with having longer hair). To record their first album, The Last Sunset, they formed their own record label, CSF Records. However, after talks and negotiations, Conception signed with Noise Records in 1993 and recorded their second album Parallel Minds. In 1995, they released their third album, In Your Multitude and their fourth and final album, Flow, in 1997.

Their somewhat short-lived career (the band disbanded in 1997-8) was characterized by a unique and distinct sound in the power/progressive metal genre which was slightly altered with their last studio release, Flow.

Reunion

Conception was reunited in 2005, playing the important American prog metal festival Prog Power USA 2005 on Friday, September 16 and Norwegian Scream Magazine's 15 Years & 100 Issues Festival on Saturday, October 1, bringing guitarist Tore Østby (Ark), singer Roy Khan (now lead singer of Kamelot) and the rest of the band back together.
