Fairy Tale Companion: Concha Castroviejo

Castroviejo, Concha (1915–95), Spanish novelist and writer of children's tales. She published her stories in several periodicals such as Informaciones (Pieces of Information) and La Noche (The Night). In 1961 she received the Doncel Award of Children's Literature for a book entitled El jardín de las siete puertas (The Garden with Seven Doors, 1961). This work contains a small play, from which the whole collection takes its title, and 14 tales very much influenced by the fairy‐tale genre. Some of the most beautiful tales in this book are: ‘La tejedora de sueños’ (‘The Weaver of Dreams’, 1961), ‘El país que no tenía pájaros’ (‘The Country without Birds’, 1961), and ‘Karlatán y las perlas del príncipe Atal’ (‘Karlatán and Prince Atal's Pearls’, 1961).
