(organic chemistry) The stepwise reaction between functional groups of reactants in which a high-molecular-weight polymer is formed only after a large number of steps, for example, the reaction of dicarboxylic acids with diamines to form a polyamide.

The combination of simple, dissimilar molecules, with the formation of byproducts such as water or ammonia (e.g., vulcanite).
