Condor Trilogy

Wikipedia: Condor Trilogy

The Condor Trilogy (simplified Chinese: 射雕三部曲traditional Chinese: 射鵰三部曲pinyin: Shè Diāo Sān Bù Qǔ; Jyutping: Se6 Diu1 Saam3 Bou6 Kuk1) is a trilogy of three Wuxia novels by Jin Yong.

The novels in the trilogy are:

The first novel's historical background is set in the late Song Dynasty when it is at war with the Jurchens of the Jin Dynasty. The conquest of Jin by Mongolia under Genghis Khan is featured as well. The second novel depicts the military conflict between the Song Dynasty and its former ally Mongolia. The historical Battle of Xiangyang is featured in the novel. The third novel is set in the Yuan Dynasty, established by the Mongolians who eventually conquered the Song Dynasty and the rest of China. Towards the end of the third novel, the Yuan Dynasty is overthrown and the Ming Dynasty is founded.

The protagonists of these novels play significant roles in the rise and fall of the empires. In The Legend of the Condor Heroes, the protagonist Guo Jing is an ethnic Han Chinese of the Song Dynasty. He was raised in Mongolia as a child. He aided the Mongolians in their conquests of the western regions and their eventual conquest of the Jin Dynasty. Guo Jing returned to Song after the fall of Jin and dedicated the rest of his life to the defence of Song until his death.

In The Return of the Condor Heroes, the protagonist Yang Guo plays a major role in the defence of Song from the Mongolian invaders. Guo Jing plays a supporting role and helps in the development of Yang Guo's character. Yang Guo slays Mongke Khan at the end of the novel and halted the Mongolians' invasion for a period of time.

In The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber, the protagonist Zhang Wuji becomes the leader of the Ming Cult and leads the Han Chinese in overthrowing the Yuan Dynasty. Zhu Yuanzhang from the Ming Cult eventually founds the Ming Dynasty and becomes its first emperor.
