Geography Dictionary:

cone volcano

A volcanic peak with a roughly circular base tapering to a point. Cones may be built solely of lava or of scoria, or of an interbedded combination of the two. Lava flows and layers of pyroclasts form composite cones. Parasitic cones form round smaller vents on the flanks of the volcano.
