In the name of Congress, the President of the United States awards medals of honor to members of the armed services who have distinguished themselves through bravery in combat, risking their lives above and beyond the call of duty. Congress created the medals by legislation during the Civil War, and the first medals were awarded in March 1863. Each branch of the armed services nominates those soldiers, sailors, marines, and aviators most deserving of the honor. Veterans who have received the medal are also entitled to a special pension.
