Conjuration d'Amboise

Amboise, Conjuration d' (1560). A failed Protestant attempt to wrest the youthful François II from the domination of the Guise family. Such direct action, even if justified on the grounds that it was directed at the king's ‘evil advisors’ rather than at the king himself, was regarded with absolute horror. It helped provoke the Wars of Religion.
