Gardener's Dictionary:

contact insecticide


A chemical that kills insects through skin contact; it does not have to be ingested. Insecticidal soap and horticultural oil are both contact insecticides. They must be sprayed directly on the insects to be effective; any insects that evade the spray survive. See also systemic insecticide.
