Conte (English, "count") is a title of Italian nobility used in Italy and other Catholic European countries. The female form is contessa. The equivalent French titles are comte and comtesse.

CONTE FAMILY
The Italian surname Conte is of nickname origin, based on a characteristic of the original bearer by which he was widely known. In this case, the name is based on the Italian word "conte", which literally means "a count". It is clear that early bearers of the name would have been known for their lofty manner, and their airds and graces. Another possible explanation of the name is that the eponymous Conte was a memever of the community who participated in the popular Miracle (or Mystery) Plays of the Middle Ages.
These These were theatrical dramatization of the Gospels which were staged in the local market square. It was usual for the same man to play a particular role for a number of years. Thus become associated with this character. CHaracters in thes Mystery Plays ranged from Kings to peasants, as the plays began to become less religious; acting by characters such as "the count", were a normal part of such performances.
Reference to the family Conte include a record of the Conte family of MIlan who are documented as early as the eleventh century. In 1099 a member of this great family was created Cardinal by Pope Pasqual II, other members of the family held prominent positions in civil life including Bernardo Conte who was the head of the ruling council of Curin.
