An order of the subclass Zoantharia or Hexacorallia. These sea anemones resemble corals in their weak musculature, capitate (spherically tipped) tentacles, and complex nematocysts. They do not possess a skeleton, however. The tentacles are arranged in radial rows, not cycles, on the disk, and the base has no musculature. The group occurs in shallow water from the temperate zone to the tropics. The species are solitary, although they may occur in large, asexually produced aggregations. Examples are Corallimorphus and Corynactis. See also Anthozoa.
