In VIA Pharmaceuticals' previous incarnation as Corautus Genetics, the company had its heart in the right place, but its drug candidate wasn't able to help blood flow in cardiac patients. The development-stage drug company has been in a state of transition since disappointing results prompted the company to end all testing of its gene therapy products. It then mapped a fresh future and completed a reverse merger with drug development partner VIA Pharmaceuticals. VIA brings to the transaction its VIA-2291 small-molecule drug in Phase II trials to treat vascular inflammation. The combined company will focus on VIA-2291 as its lead candidate.
