Corona del Mar High is located in Newport Beach, California and belongs to the Newport Mesa Unified School District. It is a combination of a middle school (7th & 8th grades) and a high school (9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th grades). The seventh and eighth graders have traditionally been called Sea Weeds, which is a play on words of the actual mascot, Sea Kings.
History
The school was established in 1962, and has consistently proven itself a top-ranking school in both California and the nation. Winning many awards in academics and sports, CdM is considered one of California's top schools, and in the Summer of 2005 the school embarked on a massive renovation project in the wake of California Measure "A".
Athletics
Corona del Mar high has one of Southern California's most respected athletic programs, and has won ten Pacific Coast League titles and four CIF Southern Section Championships in 2006 under athletic director Jerry Jelnick. He was replaced in that position by former basketball coach Paul Orris in July 2006. In 2006, the girl's tennis team completed an undefeated season (28-0) and won the CIF championship. The girl's cross country team won both the CIF championship and the State championship. In March of 2007, the boy's basketball team won their fourth CIF Championship. Corona del Mar has also added boy's and girl's lacrosse to their sports program. 2007 will be the inaugural CIF season for both teams.
