[koh-toh dehks ahn proh-VAHNS] appellation, elevated from vdqs in 1985, that is located around the French city of Aix-en-Provence, northeast of Marseille. Red and rosé wines are made from cabernet sauvignon, cinsaut, grenache, mourvèdre and syrah; white wines are made from clairette, grenache blanc, sauvignon blanc, sémillon and Ugni Blanc (trebbiano). Rosé wines make up over half the production followed by red wines and a very few white wines.
