  1. A small low bed for an infant, often furnished with rockers.

    2. A place of origin; a birthplace: the cradle of civilization.
    1. A framework of wood or metal used to support something, such as a ship undergoing construction or repair.
    2. A framework used to protect an injured limb.
  2. A low flat framework that rolls on casters, used by a mechanic working beneath an automobile. Also called creeper.
  3. The part of a telephone that contains the connecting switch upon which the receiver and mouthpiece unit is supported.
    1. A frame projecting above a scythe, used to catch grain as it is cut so that it can be laid flat.
    2. A scythe equipped with such a frame.
  4. A boxlike device furnished with rockers, used for washing gold-bearing dirt.

A base unit for a portable or removable device. For example, PDAs and digital cameras often come with cradles that are plugged into the wall outlet for battery charging and cabled to the computer for data transfer. Cradles, in conjunction with accompanying software that must be installed in the computer, may automatically upload the data from the device when placed in the cradle. See HDD cradle.

A barred restraining device.

  • calf c. — is interposed in a chute in a vertical position. The calf is driven in. It may be anything up to 6 months of age. One side of the cradle is movable and the calf is clamped in tightly. The cradle is then swiveled on its bottom hinge and the calf is upended so that it can be castrated, branded, dehorned.
  • neck c. — a series of bars tied together like a nonrigid fence. Tied round the neck of a horse like a loose splint, it prevents the horse from biting or licking itself.
  • lamb c. — the lamb is laid on its back in the device, its legs are clamped in position exposing scrotum and tail for castration and tail docking, and the perineal area to expose skin folds for mulesing.
