Craig Ellwood

American architect. He made his name with the Case Study house, 1811 Bel Air Road (1951–2), followed by two more Case Study houses at 9554 Hidden Valley Road (1954) and 1129 Mirdero Road (1955), all in Los Angeles, CA. An exponent of the rectangular grid based on a steel-framed structure, he developed the parti of Mies van der Rohe with his Smith House, Crest-wood Hills (1957–8), and his Rosen House, 910 Oakmount Drive, Brentwood (1961–3), both in Los Angeles. In his later buildings he exploited exposed steel trusses, notably with the Art Center School, Pasadena, CA (1970–5), which is essentially a bridge spanning between two hills.
