History

The company has its roots in Craig Media, which was founded in 1948 by John Craig in Brandon, Manitoba, and began its foray in television broadcasting in 1955 with the launch of CKX-TV.

The company was based in Brandon, Manitoba, then later in Calgary, Alberta with Drew Craig, the grandson of John Craig, as its CEO. Craig Media was the owner of the original A-Channel system; CKX, a CBC affiliate, in Brandon, Manitoba; Toronto One, local television station in located in Toronto; and three digital television specialty channels: MTV Canada (now Razer), MTV2 (now PunchMuch) and TV Land Canada.

In January 2004, it was announced that Craig Media's broadcasting assets were up for sale. On April 12, 2004, CHUM Limited announced a deal to purchase Craig Media's broadcasting assets for $265 million. The sale was approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on November 19, 2004, and was completed on December 1 of that year. With the subsequent takeover of CHUM in 2007, most of Craig's former broadcasting assets — excluding the A-Channel stations, now Citytv, which are now owned by Rogers Media — are now owned by CTVglobemedia.

CHUM did not acquire Craig's telecommunications operations, which remain in operation under the Craig Wireless name.

Craig Wireless was founded by John's grandson, Boyd Craig.
