Biography

Crazy Town's music and image reflects one of the most dynamic and volatile sociocultural environments on the planet -- Los Angeles -- where the urban squalor of the South Central district exists just minutes away from the glamour and glitz of Beverly Hills. Spearheaded by lyricists/vocalists/producers Seth "Shifty Shellshock" Binzer and Bret "Epic" Mazur, Crazy Town combines hip-hop's lyrical attitude and rhythmic sass with the sonic luv muscle of live rock instrumentation.

Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer grew up in Southern California Mazur's father was Billy Joel's manager. Binzer's father was an artist and film-maker who directed the Rolling Stones' live movie Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones. Their sons grew up listening to N.W.A., Cypress Hill and Ice-T, as well as alternative rock bands like the Cure. Mazur is originally from New York but attended high school in California with Ice Cube, Divine Styler, Everlast, and House of Pain's Danny Boy. He started making beats and cutting tracks early on and wound up providing music for MC Serch of 3rd Bass' solo record. He worked on records by Eazy-E and MC Lyte and was briefly DJ for House of Pain. Meanwhile, Binzer had come across a copy of the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill while in Mexico, and found a side of hip-hop that inspired him to start making demo recordings on his own.

It wasn't until Binzer and Mazur hooked up that they felt they could pursue careers as professional musicians. Initially coming together as the Brimstone Sluggers, the pair recorded plenty of music, but never completed a full album of their own because they kept getting involved with and contributing to other hip-hoppers' projects, for example, Divine Styler and what would later become Black Eyed Peas. They both also ended up in rehabilitation clinics and it was writing to each other from rehab when they hatched the plan that became Crazy Town: a hip-hop band featuring a full instrumental lineup to complement their rapping group, rooted in classic rap-rock miscegenation (like Run-D.M.C.'s "Rock Box" or Public Enemy and Anthrax's collaborative "Bring Tha Noize," etc.)

Recruiting Doug "Faydoedeelay" Miller (bass), Rust Epique (guitar), Anthony "Trouble" Valli (guitar), DJ A.M. (turntables), and James "JBJ" Bradley J (drums), a former sessioneer who played on the Beastie Boys' Check Ya Head album, and Crazy Town was born.

The band's debut album, The Gift of Game, was produced by close friend Josh Abraham (Orgy, Coal Chamber). Helping out were special guests KRS-One, dancehall toastmaster Mad Lion, and Dirty Unit. A friend of the group had dropped by while they were recording, liked what he heard, and immediately called up Mad Lion, who offered his services as toaster on the track "Hollywood Babylon." Mad Lion took a tape home and played it for KRS-One, who was suitably impressed and in turn volunteered his services for "B-Boy 2000." The album spawned a world-wide hit in "Butterfly," an ode to the one special woman every man hopes to have by his side someday. ~ Ed Nimmervoll, All Music Guide

Crazy Town was a rapcore band formed in Los Angeles in 1995 by Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer. The band is known for their 2001 single "Butterfly", which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The final lineup of Crazy Town consisted of Bret Mazur (vocals), Seth Binzer (vocals), Kraig Tyler (guitar, backing vocals), Kyle Hollinger (drums), Doug Miller (bass guitar) and Anthony Valli (guitar).

History of the band

Formation (1995–1999)

Mazur and Binzer, who was then going by the name of "Shifty Shellshock", started collaborating together in 1995 under the name of The Brimstone Sluggers. By early 1999, Crazy Town consisted of Mazur, Binzer, Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr., Miller, Adam Goldstein (aka. DJ AM) and Valli. Their debut album, The Gift of Game, was released in November 1999, having been recorded earlier that year.

The Gift of Game and Butterfly (1999–2001)

The release of The Gift of Game was followed by a tour support slot for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Guitarist Rust Epique left the band while the album was being mixed, and Crazy Town was joined by Kraig Tyler shortly after. The first two singles from the album, "Toxic" and "Darkside", were released with minimal success. Turntablist DJ AM left at this point. The third single "Butterfly" peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 24 and April 7 in 2001. After this DJ AM returned.

Darkhorse (2001–2003)

Their second album, Darkhorse, was produced in 2002 by Howard Benson. Benson's influence resulted in a more rock oriented sound. Prior to recording the album, DJ AM had left once again, and drummer James Bradley Jr. was replaced by Kyle Hollinger. Hollinger had previously played in the band Shuvel. The album achieved little commercial success, spawning only two singles: "Hurt You So Bad" and "Drowning". Shortly after the release of Darkhorse, the band broke up in 2003.

The second single "Hurt You So Bad" features Rivers Cuomo from Weezer on guitar.

Crazy Town In Hiatus

Binzer released his first solo album, Happy Love Sick, under the alias Shifty in 2004, producing one single "Slide Along Side". Binzer also contributed vocals to Paul Oakenfold's single "Starry Eyed Surprise".

Tyler contributed to Ringer, a project he started with Eric Powell of 16volt. Although their album was not officially released, it is available for download from their site. link

Rust Epique joined PreThing in 2003. Their album 22nd Century Lifestyle was released in 2004, shortly after Epique died of a heart attack.

Crazy Town Is Back (3)

Seth has made a new myspace profile where he writes; "At the moment Epic and I are working on another album called Crazytown is Back which we have produced 2 songs so far called Hit That Switch and Hard to Get. We are expecting to finish up that album sometime in 2008."

The previously mentioned new songs are now available for listen on Crazy Town's myspace. Also, a picture has been added to their photo gallery promoting the album as "3"
