"Crestfallen" is a track on The Smashing Pumpkins' 1998 album, Adore, that was scheduled to be the disc's third single, but was aborted after disappointing sales of the album. Only a promo CD was released on November, 1998, featuring the original artwork by Yelena Yemchuk. The band performed the song at the VH1 Fashion Awards on October 27, 1998. The song features Billy Corgan on piano, with James Iha standing in on lead guitar. It was also the very first to include Corgan on piano live, the first performance of which took place on band's gig in Nashville during the promo tour in summer of 1998.
The song was played on modern rock stations during the winter of 1998 but was never released, to the notable indignation of the Pumpkins' fan base.
"Crestfallen" was played at the end of the 2000 TV movie Homicide: Life Everlasting, which served as a coda to that prematurely canceled program. During its run, "Homicide: Life on the Street" was known for its use of contemporary music to great effect and it is fitting that this elegiac Pumpkins song was used to conclude the series.
Bassist D'arcy Wretzky mentioned the song as one of the songs off Adore which makes her cry.[citation needed]
