| Wikipedia: Cringle |
A cringle is a device surrounding a hole in a textile, designed to protect the edges of the hole from abrasion. In nautical settings, cringles are often found along the edges and in the corners of sails.
A cringle is distinct from a grommet, by virtue of the nature the material from which it is fabricated. Whereas a grommet is made from a material softer than the material it protects, a cringle is made from a harder material.
