Another one-man mishmash from prolific Hong Kong writer/producer/director Wong Jing, this standard action-comedy stars veteran actor Andy Lau as Happy Chiu, a tough, dedicated police officer on the SDU squad (Hong Kong's equivalent of a SWAT team) who aborts a hostage crisis in a movie theater as the film opens. Unfortunately, as part of his heroic effort, Happy is shot in the head and surgeons are unable to remove the bullet. Happy spends nine long months recovering from his injury, but finally is convinced that he has to retire from the SDU because any more trauma to the head could kill him. Happy contents himself with continuing in strictly an advisory capacity, and is paired with a piggish officer nicknamed Bad Odor (Alex Man). Bad Odor and Happy strike an early release deal with a female convict named Bitch Ying (Sandra Ng) to secure her help in apprehending the wanted murderer Fu (Lung Fong) and his gang of thugs. Fu is trying to murder a wealthy corporate magnate and steal some valuable antiques from the intended victim's safe, put up to the murder by the executive's venal son, who wants his father and brother dead so he can seize control of the business. Bad Odor is naked for most of the film's bizarre Die Hard-inspired final act, and there are also -- in addition to Bad Odor, Happy Chiu, and Bitch Ying -- characters called Stalled Engine Te (Cheung Kwok-keung) and Convulsion (Frankie Chin). Otherwise, it's just more weirdness from one of the most derivative (yet somehow strangely original) of Hong Kong filmmakers. Alvina Kong co-stars with Ricky Yee and Shing Fui-on, while veteran actress Rosamund Kwan has a clever cameo and Maria Cordero shows up as a maid. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
