One of the terms that students learn in business school is "niche marketing," which means determining who your market is and catering to that market. Instead of trying to please everyone, you decide who your target audience is and do everything imaginable to convince them to buy your product. Fonovisa's niche is the regional Mexican market; although the label puts out some non-Mexican CDs, the vast majority of its releases have a Mexican orientation. Cronica de Dos Grandes is a perfect example of niche marketing on Fonovisa's part; los Bukis (the outfit that put Marco Antonio Solis on the map) and Bronco are two major names in regional Mexican music (or musica mexicana regional in Spanish), and this two-disc set takes dead aim at Fonovisa's primary audience. Cronica de Dos Grandes is evenly divided between los Bukis' hits and Bronco's hits -- that is true on both the main disc (an audio CD containing 20 songs) and a bonus DVD that offers four los Bukis videos and four Bronco videos -- and by constantly going back and forth between the two groups, Fonovisa shows the parallels between them. Neither los Bukis nor Bronco are purists when it comes to regional Mexican music; most of these exitos (hits) are slick, polished, romantic Latin pop with Mexican overtones. Bronco can be somewhat earthier at times, but overall, a very romantic approach prevails on Cronica de Dos Grandes -- whether you're hearing Bronco on "Oficialmente Loco" and "Sed" or los Bukis on "Yo Te Necesito," most of these recordings are essentially Mexican adult contemporary (or a Mexican equivalent of Julio Iglesias and José José). Cronica de Dos Grandes is far from the last word on either los Bukis or Bronco, but it does provide an enjoyable, if predictable, sample of both groups. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
