cross fade

Transition of two sounds. As one sound increases in volume (see fade in), another sound decreases (see fade out). Together, the sounds create a cross fade. This same effect can be achieved with lighting instruments. As one lighting source fades in, a second source fades out. In video, however, the effect created by the simultaneous transition of two images is called dissolve.
