Crotus Rubeanus

Crotus Rubeanus or Rubianus (Dornheim, Thuringia, 1480-after 1539), was a member of the humanist group in Erfurt headed by Mutianus Rufus, and his principal literary distinction is the authorship of the first part of the polemical Latin work, Epistolae obscurorum virorum. He had early contacts with Luther and for a time supported him. In 1530 he was received back into the Roman Catholic Church, becoming a canon of Halle. He defended his action in a Latin Apologia. Luther derided Crotus as ‘Dr. Kröte’. Crotus's real name was Johannes Jäger.
