cruciate ligaments

Food and Fitness: cruciate ligaments

Ligaments that span the capsule of the knee, binding the femur to the tibia. The cruciate ligaments cross each other forming an X-shaped structure which helps to prevent displacement of the bones. See also anterior cruciate ligaments.

Sports Science and Medicine: cruciate ligaments
Top

Ligaments that cross each other to form an X-shaped configuration within the notch between the femoral condyles of the kneecapsule. The anterior cruciate ligament attaches the femur to the anterior tibia. It prevents backward sliding of the femur and overextension at the knee. It is lax when the knee is flexed and taut when the knee is extended. The posterior cruciate ligament attaches the femur to the posterior tibia. It prevents the femur from sliding forwards and the tibia from being displaced backwards.
