Warship built for high speed and great cruising radius, smaller than a battleship but larger than a destroyer. The term originally meant frigates of the sailing era, used to scout for enemy fleets and raid convoys. After 1880, it was a specific type of armoured warship. By World War II, cruisers served mainly as floating bases for amphibious assaults and as protection for aircraft-carrier task forces. Today U.S. cruisers carry surface-to-air missiles vital to a fleet's air-defense screen. Nuclear propulsion has given some cruisers virtually unlimited range.

cruiser, large, fast, moderately armed warship, intermediate in type between the aircraft carrier and the destroyer. During World War II, battle cruisers operated as small battleships, combining in one vessel maximum qualities of gun caliber, armor protection, and speed. Upon the retirement of the battleship from the major navies of the world, the cruiser became the largest of the conventionally armed warships in commission. The cruiser's primary mission in modern warfare is to provide antiaircraft defense and gunfire support for aircraft carriers. Light cruisers, lightly armed and very fast, are often employed in scouting, police duties, and other jobs where speed rather than defensive strength is important. The advent of guided missiles as the primary offensive weapon of modern warfare has led to the conversion of many cruisers into guided-missile cruisers. The guided-missile cruiser Long Beach (completed 1961) was the first ship since World War II to be constructed for the U.S. navy from keel up as a cruiser; it was also the first nuclear-powered surface fighting ship in the world.

Biography

The Scottish sextet Cruiser was formed in 1999. Originally a project that featured only Kevin Lynch (guitars, keyboards, vocals, sequencing), by the time a lo-fi demo of his found its way into the hands of the independent Devil in the Woods label, Cruiser was signed and Lynch was asked to assemble a band. Soon a lineup of Matt Dean (bass, keyboards, vocals), John Brennan (guitars, vocals), Murray MacKay (guitars, keyboards, vocals, sequencing), Caroline Barber (vocals, cello, keyboards), and Lynch's brother, Mikey Dean (keyboards), joined up with Cruiser's lone founding member. The resulting album, 2001's Northern Electric, showed Cruiser's sound was a fusion of country-rock meets electronica and alternative, recalling such renowned artists as Neil Young, Kraftwerk, and My Bloody Valentine. Before fronting Cruiser, Lynch worked concert lights for Slowdive and Adorable, and engineered the Mogwai EP. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
