(Customer Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "c-sick." Another term for ASIC, which was coined by Motorola. Some feel this is a more accurate description of an ASIC chip. See ASIC.

The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spanish or Spanish National Research Council is the largest public research organisation in Spain. Dependent of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the CSIC is multidisciplinary and carries out research in many science fields through its more than 100 centers around Spain. Its current president is Rafael Rodrigo Montero.

Origins

Its origins are found in the Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios (1907-1939) born within the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and inspired in the Krausist philosophy.

Functions

According to the Law of Promotion and General Coordination of Scientific and Technical Research (Law 13/1996 of April 4) and its Regulation, the current objectives and functions of the CSIC are:

  • The realization of scientific and technological research projects.
  • To act as consultant for the Public Administration in scientific matters.
  • Promotion of Science.
  • Collaboration with the Autonomous Communities in their research activities.
  • Collaboration with the universities in their research activities.
  • Education of researchers and scientists.
  • Collaboration with the National R&D Plans.

Research centres

CSIC has a number of specialised research centres carrying out research in several fields, including:

  • CIB - Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (Centre of Biological Research)
  • Parque de Rescate de Fauna Sahariana (Rescue Park for Sahara Fauna), Almeria, established in 1971 to preserve Saharan species on the verge of extinction.
