Ctesibius

 

(fl Alexandria, 3rd centurybc).Inventor, probably active c 270 bc. He was famous for his mechanical devices operated by the pressure of water or air, which were often elaborate toys, created to amuse the court. His most significant invention was the hydraulis, in which a lever-actuated piston forced air into a chamber partly filled with water and thence to the pipes.

Ctesibius (tĭsĭb'ēəs), fl. 2d cent. B.C., Alexandrian Greek inventor. He reputedly was the first to discover and apply the expansive power of air as a motive force. Among the inventions ascribed to him are a water clock (clepsydra), a hydraulic organ, and a force pump.
