Investment Dictionary: CUSIP Number

An identification number assigned to all stocks and registered bonds. The Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures (CUSIP) oversees the entire CUSIP system.

This system is used in the U.S. and Canada. Foreign securities have a similar number called the "CINS number".

Number identifying all stocks and registered bonds, using the Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures (Cusip). Brokers will use a security's CUSIP number to look it up on a computer terminal to get further information. The CUSIP number will also be listed on any trading confirmation tickets. The CUSIP system makes it easier to settle and clear trades. Foreign securities use a similar identification system called the CUSIP International Numbering System (CINS).
