Game Description

Custer's Revenge was one of the most infamous "X-rated" games of the early '80s. This controversial, adult-oriented game from Mystique went down in history as one of the first video games that "simulated" human copulation (and in a demeaning and disturbing manner, no less).

The controversy arose not only because Custer's Revenge was a sexually-explicit game, but also from the game's storyline, which involves a naked General Custer and a Native American woman (also naked) tied to a post. Although Mystique denied that the object of the game was to rape the woman, it was not surprising that the National Organization of Women and the American Indian Community House protested the game's release.

In Custer's Revenge, the goal is to guide Custer across the screen while avoiding the arrows that are dropping from the sky. Once you reach the woman, you must rapidly press the joystick button in order to "score" (quoted from the instruction manual).

The game offers one variation, which adds cacti to Custer's path.

Review: Overall

Custer's Revenge is an adult title with a severe lack of taste. You, as General Custer, have sex with a Native American woman tied to a post.

It's really no wonder that this game was protested. It is, more or less, a glorification of rape portrayed not only as "funny" but also pleasurable for the victim. It's tasteless and disgusting in terms of just the subject matter itself. What the peddlers at Mystique thought of as titillating is nothing more than a sort of sanitized snuff film where taking advantage of a helpless victim is encouraged by giving points.

This, of course, says nothing about the game itself. Frankly, if Custer's Revenge hadn't been protested by various political organizations, it would have been attacked by the gamers. This game stinks above and beyond its callous treatment of obviously distasteful subject matter.

Gameplay consists of walking the nude Custer across the screen without getting hit by falling arrows. After reaching the Native American maiden you can "score," a term taken directly from the manual. That's it. Reach 50 points, and you return to the left side of the screen with the action speeded up.

The graphics are ridiculous, even considering the limitations of the Atari 2600. Oversized body parts abound in blocky chunks.

If this were a decent game, its subject matter would make you feel creepy for enjoying it. If it contained decent subject matter, the game itself would still be pitifully bad. As it stands, there are no redeeming qualities to this title. If you run across a copy of Custer's Revenge, don't play it.

The graphics are the best aspect of the game, and they aren't that good.

Review: Documentation

Flimsy, not that the game is too complicated. About half of the manual is spent by {@Mystique} justifying themselves.

Custer's Revenge (also known as Westward Ho and The White Man Came) is a pornographic video game made for the Atari 2600 by Mystique, a company that produced a number of adult video game titles for the system. The main character was based on General George Custer.[1]

The game was first released on October 13, 1982, and has received significant criticism because of its crude simulation of an apparent rape of a Native American woman.[2][3] As a result, it has been credited as being one of the worst games ever made.[4]

Gameplay

In the game, the player controls the character of General George Armstrong Custer, depicted as a man wearing nothing but a cavalry hat, boots, and a bandana, sporting a visible erection. Custer has to overcome arrow attacks to reach the other side of the screen. His goal is to have intercourse with a naked, large-breasted Native American woman, named "Revenge."

Reception

Custer's Revenge gained notoriety for its peculiar plot. The game prompted criticism from women's rights groups who stated that the game was a simulation of rape; the back of the packaging states "she's not about to take it lying down, by George! Help is on the way. By God! He's coming." Other groups such as Women Against Pornography, Native American spokespersons, and critics of the video game industry in general protested the game. Andrea Dworkin claimed the game "generated many gang rapes of Native American women."[5]

Aside from complaints over the game's sexual content, the game was not well received due to poor gameplay and graphics — the two characters' appearances have been compared to Lego bricks or cardboard boxes.[6]

The focused media attention caused the game to sell approximately 80,000 copies, twice as many copies as Mystique's other X-rated games, Bachelor Party and Beat 'Em & Eat 'Em.

Variations

Like many other video game manufacturers of the early 1980s, Mystique went out of business. It sold the rights to its games to Playaround, which continued to market Custer's Revenge as Westward Ho for a time. Playaround made minor modifications to the game, which included making the skin of the "woman" darker and having her extend her arm and gesture to "Custer" to come over to her. It also made a version of the game called General Retreat. In this game it is the "woman" who has to overcome various obstacles to have sex with "Custer." Instead of arrows, cannon balls are fired at the woman.

Due to the game's pornographic gameplay, this game was often banned from stores or hidden behind the sales counter and only could be bought after directly asking for the game and after presenting I.D[citation needed].
