Bible Guide: Cuth, Cuthah

A Sumerian city dedicated to the god Nergal, lord of the underworld. When the Assyrian king Sargon conquered Samaria and deported the Children of Israel to Assyria, he brought in "men of Cuth" and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the Children of Israel (II Kgs 17:24, 30). The men of Cuth brought the cult of their god Nergal to their new country (II Kgs 17:30).

The site of Cuth has been identified as Tell Ibrahim, some of 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Babylon.
