Cypress Bioscience explores the swampy waters of functional somatic syndromes, a group of chronic symptom-based disorders that are, on the whole, poorly understood. The biotech company's primary target is fibromylagia, a condition marked by pain, stiffness, and fatigue that tends to affect adult women. Cypress Bioscience licensed a drug called milnacipran (branded as Savella) from French drugmaker Pierre Fabre as a potential therapy for fibromyalgia. Developed with partner Forest Laboratories, Savella was approved by the FDA in 2009. Cypress Bioscience has also partnered with Collegium Pharmaceutical to develop reformulations and analogs of milnacipran.
