d.k.s. system

Measures and Units: d.k.s. system

Metric-d.k.s., also D.K.S. system

(Metric) A version of the general system that has its derived constants relating coherently to the decimetre, the kilogram, and the second, in contrast with the centimetre, the gram, and the second of the c.g.s. system and with the metre, the kilogram, and the second of the m.k.s. system and the SI system. In the d.k.s. system, for example, the unit of force is the crinal, which gives an acceleration of 1 dm·s-2 to a body of 1 kg, just a tenth of the newton of the SI, which gives an acceleration of 1 m·s-2 to a body of 1 kg. The d.k.s. system had little acceptance and is now essentially defunct; the contemporary standard is the SI system using the m.k.s. scheme.
