Biography

The Dale Warland Singers are an American choral group founded in 1971 by Dale Warland. It is a professional, 40-voice a cappella chorus recognized as one of the finest in the United States. Based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, area, they frequently tour both in the United States and abroad.

In 1990, the group represented North America in the Second World Symposium on Choral Music in Helsinki. They have appeared on the nationwide radio programs St. Paul Sunday and A Prairie Home Companion and primarily record on the American Choral Catalog label and have released over 20 compact discs. Their annual Echoes of Christmas and Cathedral Classics broadcasts are also heard on stations across the U.S. The group was the first-ever recipient of the Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence in 1992.

The Warland Singers enjoy a reputation for promoting the composition of new and exciting choral repertoire. Among the composers they have commissioned for new music are Libby Larsen, Stephen Harrison Paulus, Carol Barnett, George Shearing, Peter Schickele, Dominick Argento, Augusta Read Thomas, and Bernard Rands.

Although the Dale Warland Singers are primarily an a cappella group, they do collaborate and have joined the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra for concerts and have sung with the James Sewell Ballet. The group also participates in a larger chorus, the Warland Symphonic Chorus. In that, Dale Warland Singers members join and form the experienced core of a larger chorus otherwise made up of volunteer singers from the Twin Cities area.

Since its founding, the group has had the same music director: Dale Warland, who has earned degrees at St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Southern California. Prior to devoting himself to full-time work with the Singers, Warland had served for 19 years as director of choral music at Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. He has also been on the faculty of the All Japan Chorus League National Competition in Fukuoka, Japan. ~ Joseph Stevenson, All Music Guide
