Dalton State College, also referred to as DSC or Dalton State, is one of eight state colleges in the University System of Georgia[6]; it is also one of four University System units with a Technical Division supervised by the separate Technical College System of Georgia.[7] The college is located in Dalton, Georgia.

The college was founded as Dalton Junior College in July 1963 and opened in September 1967 offering programs designed to provide the first two years of college work for students preparing to transfer to four-year degree granting institutions. The addition of a vocational and technical division in 1976 made the school a comprehensive community college, able to serve nontransfer students wishing to develop work skills at the certificate or associate-degree level. In 1987, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia removed the word "Junior" from the college's name so that it became Dalton College. The University System changed the name to Dalton State College in 1998 and authorized the development of the college's first baccalaureate degree programs, all in business and technology. In 2000, a baccalaureate program in social work was authorized, designed with special emphasis on serving the fast-growing Hispanic population of northwest Georgia.[8]

Dalton State College now offers, in addition to certificate and associate-degree programs,

The more than 4,500 traditional and non-traditional commuter students at Dalton State College come from a 12-county service area and some 38 foreign countries. The average student age is 24, and females make up 62 percent of the student population.[10] On campus housing will be available beginning Fall 2009.[11]

Dalton State College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Early Childhood Education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Social Work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Accreditation of the Business Administration programs by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is pending. [12]

Campus

The Dalton State College main campus consists of 146 acres (0.59 km2) nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains adjacent to I-75 in Whitfield County, Georgia.[10] Some refer to the school as Harvard on the Highway due to its location next to I-75.
