Amenities

The village pub is 'The White Swan'; it lies in the centre of the village, opposite the small village green.

It is often frequented by walkers from the Coast to Coast Walk (C2C) walk, which was pioneered by Alfred Wainwright

The pub was closed by the owners in October 2008, was repossesed, and has recently been sold (July '09), and is expected to resume business in late 2009.

There is a Village Hall which is used for community activities and social functions.

The village church is known simply as Danby Wiske Parish Church and is a Grade 1 Listed Building. The doorway dates from Norman times, and has a 12th century north aisle.

Danby Wiske is around ¼ mile from the East Coast Main Line; there was once a railway station here, but this has long since closed.

The village once had a school but this too closed long ago; the village children now attend schools in Northallerton.

History

The estate of Danby Wiske was owned by the Calvert family; their most famous son was George Calvert, founder of the state of Maryland in the United States. It has changed hands several times since.
