Dance Magazine

Dictionary of Dance: Dance Magazine

American monthly magazine devoted to all forms of theatre dance. It was first published in 1927 under Ruth Eleanor Howard under the title The American Dancer. Between 1938 and 1941 it ceased publication but it is now one of the world's major dance publications. In 1954 it presented the first of its Dance Magazine Awards, its recipients including many of the major names in 20th-century dance. Long-standing editor Richard Philp was succeeded in the post by Janice Berman in late 1999 when the magazine's office temporarily relocated from New York to California.
