Ayala studied at the Mexico City Conservatory and while there he became part of the Group of Four, along with Contreras, Dimas and Moncayo. He served in many positions as conductor and administrator in organizations throughout Mexico, including the Mérida SO and the Yucatán Conservatory. His compositions are generally short and pentatonic in nature, many with Mayan titles or texts. His work =U kayil chaac= received wide exposure when it was performed for a CBS concert broadcast in 1936, conducted by Chávez. ~ Lynn Vought, All Music Guide
