Career
Daniel Fichelscher was, for most of their history, Florian Fricke's only stable partner in Popol Vuh. He wasn't a founding member, having replaced guitarist Conrad "Conny" Veit in 1974 (three years after the group's foundation), year in which he recorded with the group the album "Seligpreisung". While playing with Popol Vuh, he also occasionally played drums and congas with the Krautrock band Amon Düül II, appearing for example in the albums "Carnival in Babylon" (1972), "Wolf City" (1973; on which he also sung and played guitar), and "Vortex" (1981)[1]. Together with Fricke, he also played in Conny Veit's group's ("Gila") second album, "Bury My Heart in Wounded Knee"[1].
Although he contributed just a few compositions to Popol Vuh's albums, sleeve notes make clear that Fichelscher was almost entirely in charge of the instrumental parts of the group's music, playing electric and acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and assorted percussions, while Fricke often played little or not at all. He can therefore be considered fully responsible for Popol Vuh's characteristic sound. Florian Fricke himself declared: "I suppose that you would say that the core is Daniel and myself. When I've composed the things, then he's the next one that I play them with"[2] .
From 1991, towards the end of Popol Vuh's history, because he was flanked by Guido Hieronymus, who also played guitar and who greatly influenced the group's music, his importance within the group diminished, but he did maintain an important role. Since 2006, after Florian Fricke's death and Popol Vuh's dissolution, Fichelscher again plays drums with Amon Düül II replacing the group's original drummer, the late Peter Leopold[3].
