Review

When Max Cavalera left Sepultura in 1997, fans figured that some of the group's metallic fury would be lost. But this certainly proved not to be the case, as the "Derrick Green version" of the group continued to churn out such angst-filled releases as Against, Nation, and Roorback. On their fourth studio set with Green, 2006's Dante XXI, the group continues to bring the rage. While it's not the same groundbreaking work as their last few albums with Cavalera were -- Chaos A.D. and Roots -- much of the elements that made Sepultura stand out from the metal pack are still present. Andreas Kisser's penchant for penning rubbery/elastic riffs is still a main focus for the group (why Kisser remains one of metal's most overlooked guitarists remains a mystery), as evidenced by such tracks as "False" and "Buried Words," while Sepultura's desire to visit new musical avenues is evident by "Ostia," which introduces strings to the group's sound. And from a lyrical standpoint, Sepultura continues to be one of the more challenging metal bands on the scene, as Green has looked to The Divine Comedy by Italian poet/philosopher Dante Alighieri for inspiration. Overall, Dante XXI is easily one of Sepultura's strongest releases to feature Green on vocals. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

The Best of Sepultura
(2006)

Dante XXI is the tenth studio album by Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura, released in 2006 through SPV Records.

It is a concept album based on the three sections of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory), and Paradiso (paradise). The album has five tracks based on Inferno (with just the band), five tracks based on Purgatorio (featuring the band with guests and other instruments), and the final track based on Paradiso (an instrumental).

Album information

Dante XXI was originally titled "Dante 05", but was changed when it became clear that the album would not be released by the end of 2005.

The first single from the album is Convicted In Life, it won the MTV VMB Best Editing in a Video Award in 2006. [1]

A video for this track has been filmed and released. A video for the song "Ostia" has also been filmed, and has been released on the band's website, as well as other video-hosting sites. In January 2008 the band released a new music-video for the song "Ostia", a music-video for the song "Convicted in Life" was released in 2006.

The album artwork was done by Stephan Doitschinoff, whom the band commissioned to do 10 paintings based on the Divine Comedy.

Covers of Judas Priest's "Screaming for Vengeance", and Sick Of It All's "Scratch the Surface" have been recorded as b-sides. "Screaming for Vengeance" was added as a Japanese bonus track, while "Scratch the Surface" is included on the SOIA tribute album "Our Impact Will Be Felt".

Original ideas for this album included a symphonic metal album (much like Metallica's S&M album), and a concept album based on the movie A Clockwork Orange, which would later be applied to their next studio album, A-Lex.

Reception

Upon the album's release, the majority of critics said that this is the best Sepultura album featuring Derrick Green on vocals thus far. Sales of the album were disappointing, though not unexpected, since all Sepultura's albums since Against have gradually had decreasing sales, selling only 2,300 copies its first week of release in the US. [2] This is also the last album to feature Igor Cavalera on drums.

After much positive feedback in South American markets, mostly Brazil, Dante XXI has sold 120,000+ copies worldwide as of January 2, 2008 and went Gold in Brazil and Cyprus (their first music industry certification outside of Brazil since Roots). [3]
