Biography

Most fans know Panamanian actress/singer Daphne Rubin-Vega for her role as Mimi, the free-thinking doomed lover in Broadway's Tony-winning musical Rent. Before the big-belting New York City resident was an actress, though, she took a pop-star turn in the all-girl band Pajama Party, which released two little-noticed albums, Can't Live Without It and Up All Night, on Atlantic and shot to the top of the dance charts with the single "Yo No Se" in the early '90s. Though those efforts offered a glimpse at what Rubin-Vega was capable of vocally, it was the way she kicked off her career -- by approaching David Bowie producer Arif Mardin as a starry-eyed teen and pleading with him to let her record a song on the soundtrack to the 1986 George Lucas film Labyrinth -- that spoke loudest of her star-quality presence and gift for turning the charm on high.

Rent, which came along in 1994 after Rubin-Vega's attempt to establish herself as a solo vocalist post-Pajama Party with several dance singles on the Maxi label, found her through her regular gigs at Caroline's Comedy Club alongside fellow members of the Latino theater troupe El Barrio, USA. After a series of impressive performances with that outfit, casting directors recruited her to audition. By 1996, with the role of Mimi firmly in her grips and earning her raves -- her costumes, plucked from her own closet, defined the character and eventually spawned a line of Rent-derived clothes in Bloomingdale's -- she moved with the play from off-Broadway to very much on. And by the end of her name-making Rent run -- Rosario Dawson replaced her as Mimi in 1997 -- she had scored nominations for both a Tony and a Drama Desk Award.

With Broadway stardom out of her system, Rubin-Vega again directed her attention toward a singing career in 1997 with the release of Souvenirs on Mercury Records; it was met with mixed reviews. She also turned in performances in a number of forgettable films, including Wild Things and Flawless. But by 2001 she was back on Broadway, causing eyes to bug out in her role as Magenta in the all-star musical The Rocky Horror Show, based on the cult Tim Curry film. If that show marked a return to daring, free-spirited theatrical form, it was cemented in 2004 with another Tony nomination, this one for her performance in Anna in the Tropics with Jimmy Smits. Two years later she released a collection of pop, Latin folk, rock, and reggae songs titled Redemption Songs. The album hit the shelves right as she was making her debut as Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. ~ Tammy La Gorce, All Music Guide

Daphne Rubin-Vega (born November 18, 1969) is a dance music singer and actress. She is best known for originating the role of Mimi Marquez in the Broadway musical Rent.

Life and career

Rubin-Vega was born in Panama City, Panama, the daughter of Daphne Vega, a nurse, and Jose Mercedes Vega, a carpenter.[1] Her stepfather, Leonard Rubin, was a writer.[1] She began her musical career as the lead singer for the Latin freestyle group Pajama Party, placing three songs on the Hot 100 in 1989 and 1990. As a solo artist her biggest success is on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where in 1996 she hit #1 with the song "I Found It." She returned to the top of the dance/club play charts in 2003 with a dance version of Elton John's "Rocketman". In 2001 she recorded her debut full-length rock album of original songs ("Souvenirs") but it fell through the cracks when her record company Mercury merged. It is available on her website.

Rubin-Vega performed in the Broadway musical Rent, starring as Mimi Marquez, heroin-addicted nineteen-year-old who works at the Cat Scratch Club as an exotic dancer. One of her castmates was Wilson Jermaine Heredia, with whom she also starred in the 1999 film Flawless. Rubin-Vega left the cast on April 5, 1997 and was replaced by Marcy Harriell. Rubin-Vega did not participate in the film adaptation of Rent, as she was pregnant at the time of the movie's casting and filming. The role was subsequently given to Rosario Dawson.

Rubin-Vega has two Tony Award nominations to her credit: one for her role in Rent and the other for her performance as Conchita in Anna in the Tropics. She won the Theatre World Award in 1996 for Rent. She was also awarded the Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Suspense Thriller for her role in the film Wild Things with Kevin Bacon and Denise Richards. She also appeared in the 2000 production of The Rocky Horror Show in the role of Magenta.

Rubin-Vega also released her second full-length album of original songs titled Redemption Songs released on October 2006 on Sh-K Boom Records. Her rock band DRV is currently performing live shows in New York. She starred with Phylicia Rashad in a musical version of Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba at the Lincoln Center in March 2006. She played the role of Fantine in the 2006 Broadway revival of the popular musical Les Misérables.

Starting February 27, 2007 Daphne Rubin-Vega can be seen alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman in the play Jack Goes Boating at The Public Theater. More recently however, Rubin-Vega appeared in a cameo role in Sex and the City: The Movie, which premiered in May 2008.
