Written c. 1783, it was published by F. H. Jacobi in Über die Lehren des Spinoza in 1785, and in 1789 by Goethe in Goethes Schriften. Composed in irregular, short-lined, unrhymed strophes, it accepts the limitations of humanity and affirms man's noble potentialities.
