‘Das verschleierte Bild zu Sais’

German Literature Companion: ‘Das verschleierte Bild zu Sais’

‘verschleierte Bild zu Sais, Das’, a poem by Schiller first printed in 1795 in No. 9 of Die Horen. It recounts the fate of an Egyptian acolyte, who, in defiance of an express injunction, lifts the veil concealing the statue of truth, and perishes. The dying youth himself formulates the moral: ‘Weh dem, der zu der Wahrheit geht durch Schuld.’
